What is cardiac catheterization?
Cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure performed by a cardiologist that is used to detect blockages in the coronary arteries which could lead to a heart attack. By inserting a catheter into the artery in the groin and injecting a special dye that shows up in x-ray images, cardiologists can determine the severity of blockages. Using this information, they can determine what treatment or procedure is needed such as medication, angioplasty, or bypass surgery as indicated.
Who performs the procedure?
The patient-focused staff in South Jersey Healthcare’s cardiac catheterization lab is both highly skilled and compassionate. Procedures are performed by board certified invasive cardiologists with years of catheterization lab experience at other major medical centers in the region. The lab’s medical director brings more than two decades of cardiology experience to the facility.
How long does it take?
With the latest technology available right here in our region, most cardiac catheterizations can be performed on an outpatient basis. Patients are tested in the morning and home in the evening. The advantage of having the procedure performed locally is that you won’t have to worry about the hassles of traveling into the city, waiting in traffic and paying expensive parking rates.
