Medical Education

Why choose SJH for your medical education?

South Jersey Healthcare (SJH) is dedicated to providing our region with the highest quality health care delivered by a caring staff in a friendly environment. Our hospitals and doctors work together to provide quality hospital services, community health clinics, home health services, and specialty services that meet the health care needs of our community.

As it has grown during the last two decades, SJH has become one of the region’s premier healthcare systems. The SJH Regional Medical Center, the system’s newest hospital, is a state-of-the-art 262-bed facility located in Vineland where physicians can practice state-of-the-art medicine with the most advanced equipment available. The hospital’s design emphasizes patient comfort with all private rooms and a pleasing environment that makes the facility feel more like a hotel than a traditional hospital.

The health system also includes SJH Elmer Hospital, a 96-bed facility that is recognized as a treasured asset to Elmer and surrounding residents. Originally constructed in 1950 by members of the community, the hospital has built a strong reputation for clinical excellence and nationally-recognized patient satisfaction scores.

With an ever expanding scope of services and a dynamic medical and clinical staff, the introduction of residency training programs is an exciting new step in SJH’s evolution. Our goal is to provide a dynamic, engaging education offering exposure to a wide array of educational opportunities in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Family Medicine and Podiatry. Through an affiliation with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution, SJH is proud to assist in training the physicians of the future.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

SJH’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program will be dedicated to training residents in all areas of OB/GYN. Educational experiences will be available to students seeking a career as a generalist or any of the four subspecialties. Both SJH Elmer Hospital and the SJH Regional Medical Center provide first-class maternity care in comfortable settings that emphasize family involvement and the safety and comfort of mothers and babies.

The SJH Regional Medical Center is equipped with a Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit. Our special care nursery includes sophisticated incubators that can provide a temperature and humidity controlled environment and constant monitoring of babies with special needs. 24/7 Neonatology services with 24-hour in-house physician coverage is available at the Regional Medical Center.

This year, the SJH Regional Medical Center will also seek state approval of construction plans for a Level IIIa Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This new unit will expand the RMC’s capabilities and offer advanced technology for babies who are born prematurely or have other medical problems and require highly specialized care.

Residents at SJH will be mentored by our staff physicians, as well as and each other. The majority of their residency training will be offered at the SJH Regional Medical Center in Vineland. However, experiences will also be provided at SJH Elmer Hospital. Both hospitals also offer state-of-the-art operating facilities, along with the recent addition of a daVinci robot at the SJH Regional Medical Center in Vineland. Gynecologic oncology training will also be offered at Cooper University Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey and residents will rotate with SJH staff OB/GYN subspecialists to complete their training.

At SJH, the resident’s schedule is based on the recommendations for OB/GYN residency provided by the AOA Basic Standards for Postgraduate Training and the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG). Following successful completion of the four year program, participants will receive a resident certificate. It is our goal that participants completing the program will be qualified to practice general Obstetrics and Gynecology or pursue subspecialty training.
