Cancer Support Services
Talking or simply being with others who have shared a similar experience can provide comfort, hope and practical information for cancer patients. The Cancer Center facilitates a number of support services to help patients handle the physical, emotional and practical issues related to cancer and cancer care. Our professional staff includes social workers, dieticians, clergy and registered nurses who are specifically trained in oncology.
The center hosts breast cancer and prostate cancer support groups, as well as a variety of support programs designed by the American Cancer Society. Most support group sessions include presentations by health care professionals.
The Breast Cancer Bridge Program provides personal counseling and support for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families. A registered nurse becomes the client’s health care advocate and friend, offering consolation, support and practical advice about breast cancer. This free service is a complement to radiation and medical oncology care and is individually based on client’s needs and requests.
The center also offers a variety of integrative therapies including art, music, journaling, poetry and exercise. The Cancer Center partners with the American Cancer Society to bring additional support services to patients and families.
The Cancer Center offers an innovative approach to smoking cessation. SJH partners with the Vineland Health Department certified tobacco dependence treatment counselors to provide accurate smoking cessation information to their patients. SJH physicians and nurses are also provided with tools to help their patients cope with nicotine withdrawal while they are hospitalized.
Since forming a partnership with FoxChase Cancer Center in 1995, SJH has offered cancer patients the opportunity to participate in national clinical research studies. There are more than 30 clinical trials open at SJH and more than 250 patients in our community have participated.
