Women's Imaging
The SJH Radiology team understands the unique imaging needs of women and has the expertise to provide you with quality imaging services. With the recent addition of digital mammography services, our radiologists now have one more tool for providing potentially lifesaving diagnostic services.

How SJH Can Help
SJH offers a variety ofservices and technologies tohelp physicians screen forand diagnose breast cancer, osteoporosis and numerous gynecologic conditions. Digital mammography is now at four locations: Millville, Elmer, Vineland and Bridgeton. “Because denser breast tissue is harder to visualize in a standard mammogram, digital mammography provides us with a better method to screen thicker tissue,” said Jacqueline Gomberg, M.D., director of Women’s Imaging at SJH. “Digital imaging allows the radiologist to better analyze breast tissue. When further study is needed or we need to perform a breast biopsy, we can utilize ultrasound or MRI.”

Performing a breast ultrasound allows your radiologist to determine if an abnormality is solid or fluid filled. Ultrasound is also a preferred modality for use when a pregnant woman requires a breast imaging study.

Physicians are also utilizing ultrasound for breast biopsy. The instant image that an ultrasound produces allows a physician to specifically target the abnormal tissue that requires further examination. In addition to annual mammograms beginning at age 40, each woman should schedule a bone density scan to screen for osteoporosis at or around the time of menopause — earlier if she has risk factors for the condition. The test, called dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), measures bone mineral density.

“We are committed to continually keeping up with technology in caring for patients,” said Pat Newsham, R.T.M.,mammography technologist at SJH. “We provide expert, technologically advanced treatment that’s close to home.”
