Partnership with Fox Chase Cancer Center

SJH has been affiliated with Fox Chase Cancer Center, one of the nation’s leading cancer centers, since 1995. As a Fox Chase Partner, SJH provides leading-edge cancer care through national clinical trials, which study new treatments, diagnostic techniques and methods for preventing cancer here in our community. Our physicians work with specialists from Fox Chase Cancer Center via monthly video teleconferences, which include a Gynecology Tumor Board, to review treatment plans. The partnership also provides personal, helpful referral services to and from Fox Chase Cancer Center and SJH.

Quality Cancer Care

SJH’s team approach to cancer treatment has provided patients with quality, comprehensive care for more than 25 years. The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) recently granted three year approval with commendation to the SJH cancer program. SJH received the Outstanding Achievement Award for cancer services, the highest designation awarded to community hospitals. SJH also has the only Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program in Cumberland, Salem, or Gloucester counties, as designated by the CoC of the ACoS.

Our multidisciplinary cancer care team includes board-certified medical oncologists, palliative care specialists, radiation oncologists and national and advanced oncology certified nurses. Experienced radiation therapists and certified radiation oncology nurses provide personalized care in the Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion, where an on-site medical physicist supervises treatment safety and accuracy through continuous quality assurance and daily equipment tests. SJH staff medical oncologists also participate in quality reviews by Fox Chase physicians and staff.

Our friendly staff provides quality care that’s close to your home, your family and your place of business, with ample free parking and no traffic hassles. Cancer Screenings
NJ Cancer Education and Early Detection (NJ CEED)

The Cancer Center offers free screenings to promote the early detection of cancer, when it is most treatable. Many cancers have a greater than 90% cure rate when they are caught early. Our screening programs also include an educational component designed to help you reduce your cancer risk and promote the early detection of cancer.

Free cancer screenings, available to those who are eligible, include:

  • PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test for prostate cancer
  • Clinical breast exam and mammogram for breast cancer
  • Pelvic exam and Pap test for cervical cancer
  • Digital-rectal exam for prostate cancer and stool test for colon and rectal cancer
  • Periodic free cancer screenings are offered as well

Community Education

The Cancer Center provides a variety of education programs to promote community awareness of cancer and reduce the impact of cancer in our region. The center is the lead agency for the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Program (NJCEED) for Cumberland County.

Cancer Support Services

Talking or simply being with others who have shared a similar experience can provide comfort, hope and practical information for cancer patients. The Cancer Center facilitates a number of support services to help patients handle the physical, emotional and practical issues related to cancer and cancer care. Our professional staff includes social workers, dieticians, clergy and registered nurses who are specifically trained in oncology.

The center hosts breast cancer and prostate cancer support groups, as well as a variety of support programs designed by the American Cancer Society. Most support group sessions include presentations by  health care professionals.

The Breast Cancer Bridge Program provides personal counseling and support for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families. A registered nurse becomes the client’s health care advocate and friend, offering consolation, support and practical advice about breast cancer. This free service is a complement to radiation and medical oncology care and is individually based on client’s needs and requests.

For men, SJH offers a men's cancer "navigator" to help men understand and to adjust to a cancer diagnosis.

The center also offers a variety of integrative therapies including art, music, journaling, poetry and exercise. The Cancer Center partners with the American Cancer Society to bring additional support services to patients and families.

The Cancer Center offers an innovative approach to smoking cessation. SJH partners with the Vineland Health Department certified tobacco dependence treatment counselors to provide accurate smoking cessation information to their patients. SJH physicians and nurses are also provided with tools to help their patients cope with nicotine withdrawal while they are hospitalized.

Since forming a partnership with Fox Chase Cancer Center in 1995, SJH has offered cancer patients the opportunity to participate in national clinical research studies. There are more than 30 clinical trials open at SJH and more than 250 patients in our community have participated.
