Family Centered Maternity Units

SJH offers a family-centered approach to maternity services. Our mother/baby maternity units are specially designed to encourage family bonding and involvement with your newborn. We encourage “rooming-in,” mothers and their babies are placed together in the same hospital room to promote bonding. Each maternity unit has a centrally-located respite nursery for those times when a mother needs her rest. Family involvement is encouraged in the birthing process and during your hospital stay.

Specialty Care Close to Home

Cardiologists from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson Hospital perinatologists and Our Lady of Lourdes neonatologists practice at SJH facilities.

 

Our nursing staff, physicians, pediatricians or neonatologists are in attendance for high-risk or caesarian births. Pediatric cardiologists are also on hand if needed. We have the ability to stabilize infants requiring intensive care in our Intermediate Care Neonatal Unit at our Regional Medical Center. This unit has 24-hour in-house physician coverage. Personal, skilled care for infants who require more specialized nursery care is available right in your own backyard. You won’t have to travel out of the area if your newborn needs intensive care.

 

 

Childbirth and Family Education

Our childbirth and family education programs are designed to enhance your birth experience and to help you prepare to be parents. Our educators are committed to empowering you with the information you need to make informed decisions about your pregnancy, birth and newborn. Our maternity units have a lactation consultant who meets with each new parent to address questions or concerns about breastfeeding and give personal instruction on breast-feeding technique.

Several childbirth and family education classes are offered at SJH. We limit class size to allow for personalized instruction, and classes are free or have a nominal fee. The following classes are available:

Personal Care for You and Your Baby

We also know how to pamper you and your newborn and offer many of the comforts of home. Each maternity unit offers plush bathrobes for moms, personal toiletries and a special maternity menu. The maternity units also feature a kitchenette with snacks and beverages for you.

Our website features a virtual nursery. We can take a photo of your newborn and post it on our website for your friends and relatives to view your new arrival.

At discharge, you will receive a take-home dinner to make the transition from hospital to home a little easier. A diaper bag filled with baby products and samples will also be given to you.

Souvenir infant footprint sheets with your baby’s name, birthdate and footprint will be given to you to mark this special occasion.
